A key arm of the Southey Holdings Group, over more than eight decades Southey Contracting has evolved from a small specialist in industrial painting and contracting to mines and heavy industry, to one of the largest industrial services companies on the African continent.

“A fusion of technology and people driven to succeed since 1939,” the company sets out, “we are your single-source industrial services partner, specialising in asset lifecycle extension services.”

Today a multi-disciplinary industrial powerhouse, Southey Contracting delivers a vast range of engineering support services across South Africa and throughout sub-Saharan Africa. “Today we deliver a multitude of solutions to a wide variety of industries and regions,” Southey Contracting says. “Time and again, we set new benchmarks for innovation, safety and quality standards.

“This is achieved with the utmost consideration for the well-being of people and the environment.”

GROWTH AND EXPANSION

At the time of Southey Contracting’s founding by Major Robert Southey, South Africa’s mining industry, and especially gold and other precious metals, was expanding rapidly, and the need for specialists to manage coating, insulation and maintenance work was increasingly important.

In its early decades, the company forged a reputation for delivering reliable services in industrial painting and insulation to heavy industries; over time, this service portfolio has continuously expanded to include abrasive blasting, scaffolding and a variety of specialised engineering services.

Its early work, as has remained the case throughout its long and distinguished existence, proved a vital contributor to major South African industrial landmarks, including refineries and large production facilities, and was integral to cementing Southey as a core partner for asset maintenance and project execution.

From here, the company has steadily grown through deft strategic expansion, both organically and through acquisition. “Southey Contracting has become the largest industrial painting, thermal insulation and scaffolding contracting services company,” the company states, “catering for major heavy industrial operations. We have a proven ability to deliver quality, to care, transform and build a better world.”

Broadening its capabilities, and then geographic reach, by establishing operations in other provinces of South Africa and later into other African markets, Southey Contracting has expanded its presence to now encompass a total of 10 sub-Saharan countries. “The company conducts its business from an international footprint,” Southey clarifies, “which includes permanent operations in Angola, Cape Town, Gauteng, Ghana, KZN, Namibia, Mauritius and Mozambique.”

A footprint as comprehensive as this allows the company to mobilise teams and resources rapidly across national borders, and to act upon client needs in sectors such as power generation, petrochemical, mining, oil and gas, marine, pulp and paper, sugar processing, and industrial infrastructure.

Such a vast geographic spread also positions Southey Contracting to respond to economic growth and infrastructure investment across the African continent, the company explains. “Increased foreign investment is driving Africa’s economies to grow infrastructure at a significant rate – often in harsh environments where corrosion protection and thermal insulation of assets are essential – to touch on but a few of Southey Contracting’s industrial services.”

SINGLE-SOURCE PARTNER

“Our track-record speaks for itself and are we proud to have been part of the core teams that built Sapref Refinery, Sasol, Sappi and numerous other industrial landmarks.”

Southey Contracting exists today as part of Southey Holdings, a leading innovator and large privately-owned group of industrial, engineering, and manufacturing companies. The ethos of the group is founded on encouraging decentralised management, entrepreneurship and cross-company synergies, and as such, both the contracting division and its sister companies have been allowed to grow into leaders in their respective fields.

“We are represented by highly entrepreneurial, decentralised business units, with an intense focus on delivering our world-class expertise to our growing customer network,” Southey Holdings details of its armoury, which has grown both organically and inorganically into a number of independent and autonomous businesses and now represents one of the largest and most respected privately-owned groups in South Africa.

“The synergies that exist at Group level, together with culture of entrepreneurship, decentralised management, smart incentivisation and direct communication flows have allowed Southey Holdings to turn ordinary companies into star performers.

“Our vision is to dominate the mechanical engineering and construction service sectors within Africa through a continually expanding portfolio of diverse industrial companies.”

Southey Contracting is, in itself, possessive of an enormously diverse service portfolio, a full-spectrum industrial services provider with offerings built around asset lifecycle extension, installation, refurbishment, maintenance and project support for major sectors. This allows it to act as a single-source industrial service partner to ensure safety, reliability and cost-effectiveness, managing complex projects end-to-end.

Rather than clients having no choice but to mange multiple contractors for different aspects of installation, maintenance, asset protection and access, Southey Contracting delivers a suite of interconnected services under one contractual framework, a model especially valuable in heavy industrial environments where coordination, safety, quality and timing are paramount.

Coming up to 90 years of diversification and expertise, Southey Contracting is recognised as a cornerstone of South Africa’s industrial services sector and a strategic partner for complex engineering, construction, maintenance and asset integrity operations across Africa. “Southey Contracting’s support and commitment to the industry is total,” the company closes.

“Our organisation is driven by principles and values that include humility, accountability, entrepreneurial flair, respect, trust of our employees and, of course, the highest of corporate governance standards. Southey Contracting is committed to transparent, honest and sustainable business practices – putting our people, economic transformation and the environment at the core of everything we do.”
