Like any major economy, the construction sector of South Africa has long underpinned economic development in the most industrial country on the continent. But moreover, building, construction, engineering, and all associated industry sectors have driven corporate and social transformation, and while the industry has not always thrived, and while there have been significant challenges, construction will unquestionably be a pillar of strength in the country’s future. Of course, the way South Africa builds will change. But without a strong set of companies to advance standards, and to move into sub-Saharan Africa, progress will stall.
This is the message from construction industry leaders and so we set out to talk to some who are either directly or indirectly involved in the value chain of construction.
Rossmin, a leading supplier of limestone to the construction industry from its Port Shepstone operation, is confident about the way forward and has opened two new warehouse to ensure sustainability in its operations and to keep up with demand from clients.
Howden Projects, a leading engineering firm in the mining and heavy industry space, is taking on new people to ensure the next generation of engineers and innovators are suitably prepared for any incoming spike in activity.
Galvatech, the Western Cape’s premier steel galvanising business, has invested heavily in its capabilities and is now facing an “open runway for growth”.
In Cape Town, GES Labs – a leading pharmaceutical cannabis and botanical medicine business – has built a brand-new facility which is better than anything else on the market to ensure high quality testing and development of medicinal products.
While the construction space often sits underneath negative headlines, those working on the ground see the major projects that are bringing even bigger success – success that will last into the future.
