Rheinmetall Denel Munitions (RDM) has steadily carved out a reputation as one of southern Africa’s most technically advanced industrial success stories. What began as a partner with special responsibility in South Africa’s defence sector has grown into a globally recognised centre of excellence in ammunition design, development and production. With deep engineering expertise, state-of-the-art facilities near Johannesburg and Cape Town, and integration into the wider Rheinmetall advanced technology business, the company’s influence extends far beyond its geographical footprint.

From its plant engineering capabilities to its precision ammunition product lines, RDM demonstrates what is possible when world-class technical competence meets entrepreneurial agility. The company’s leadership has long understood that success in munitions manufacturing depends on mastering complex chemical and mechanical processes, optimising production systems and sustaining a pipeline of innovation that meets evolving customer requirements. In a world where reliability and performance are non-negotiable, RDM has consistently delivered. Its products sit at the intersection of precision metallurgy, propellant chemistry and robust supply chain execution, ensuring high quality outcomes for customers operating next-generation systems.

This technical excellence is underpinned by an expansive workforce and a network of domestic suppliers. RDM employs thousands across multiple sites in South Africa, and its operations support more than 1,500 domestic suppliers, with an extended economic impact touching tens of thousands of livelihoods. Central to the company’s capabilities are integrated manufacturing processes that span energetic material formulation, projectile fabrication, system assembly and plant engineering. RDM’s portfolio encompasses large and medium calibre ammunition, mortar systems and a spectrum of associated subsystems designed to meet rigorous international standards.

Even as global demand for ammunition and related products escalates, RDM has demonstrated resilience and technical agility. Recent order books reflect a period of accelerated growth, with the company securing some of the largest contracts in its history. In mid-2025, RDM won a multi-year contract from a European NATO nation for the supply of 155 mm Assegai artillery projectiles and bi-modular propelling charges, representing the largest order ever awarded to the South African subsidiary. Scheduled for delivery between 2025 and 2027, this deal underscores not only the global trust in RDM’s product quality, but also the scalability of its production systems.

STRONG PARTNERSHIPS

The growing breadth of orders has, in turn, prompted strategic expansions across the wider Rheinmetall Group. One of the most significant developments in this regard is the recent establishment of a new joint venture in South Africa: Rheinmetall Resonant South Africa (Pty) Ltd. This entity, formed with a 51% stake held by Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH and the remainder by the existing shareholders of Resonant Holding, represents a deliberate strategic response to intensifying global demand for ammunition production capacity.

Rheinmetall Resonant South Africa brings specialised expertise in plant engineering and the design of facilities for chemical precursors such as propellants and explosives, positioning it as a critical complement to RDM’s existing capabilities. As the company itself notes: “With the establishment of the new subsidiary, Rheinmetall is further expanding its range of services to create additional production capacity. This is Rheinmetall’s response to the growing global demand for ammunition. The in depth vertical integration positions the Group even stronger in terms of independent planning, construction and operation of production facilities for chemical precursors such as propellants and explosives.”

This vertical integration is more than a structural tweak. It reflects a strategic commitment to owning and controlling key segments of the production value chain in the ammunition sector. By bringing plant engineering in-house through Resonant, Rheinmetall gains increased autonomy over facility planning and execution, reducing dependency on external contractors and enhancing its ability to tailor bespoke production environments for specific chemical and energetic products. In practical terms, this means the group can extend beyond ammunition assembly into the very heart of precursor material manufacturing — a capability that is increasingly critical as clients look for partners who can deliver turnkey solutions at scale.

Rheinmetall Resonant South Africa’s technical workforce of around 150 engineers and technicians brings decades of specialised experience in designing and constructing complex chemical and explosives facilities. This complements Rheinmetall’s own engineering teams and creates a powerful integrated unit capable of delivering high-complexity projects across continents. It also aligns with RDM’s ethos of blending South African industrial expertise with global technological leadership, benefiting both the domestic economy and Rheinmetall’s broader strategic footprint.

The market context for these developments is compelling. Global demand for artillery ammunition and related products has surged in recent years in response to geopolitical uncertainty and the consequent drawdown of existing stockpiles. NATO and partner countries have been re-equipping and replenishing supplies, while investments in extended range and precision systems have grown. RDM’s expanded production capacity, in combination with Rheinmetall’s global network, places the company in a strong position to secure further contracts and partnerships.

STRONG PIPELINE

Operationally, this translates into an ambitious production trajectory. Rheinmetall aims to produce approximately 1.5 million 155 mm artillery shells per year by 2027 across its global facilities. RDM’s contribution to this output, bolstered by local capacity expansion and support from Resonant’s plant engineering expertise, is significant, and speaks to the scale of capability now resident in South Africa.

The broader economic effects of these developments cannot be overstated. Beyond large order values and production milestones, RDM and its affiliates play a vital role in the South African industrial fabric. The company’s supplier network, workforce development programmes and contributions to local engineering sectors showcase how global industrial partnerships can generate meaningful domestic impact. RDM’s success has a multiplier effect, creating opportunities for small and medium-size enterprises and fostering skills development in niche technological areas.

As the world navigates a period marked by strategic competition and varied regional conflicts — from Europe to the Middle East and beyond — the demand for reliable, high-performance munitions remains at elevated levels. Rheinmetall Denel Munitions and Rheinmetall Resonant South Africa are both beneficiaries and enablers of this market dynamic. Their combined technical excellence, expansive production capabilities, and integrated services model ensure that they are not simply responding to demand, but helping to shape the future of global ammunition supply chains.

Looking ahead, RDM’s positioning is strong. Its alignment with a broader Rheinmetall strategy that prioritises long-term partnerships, engineering innovation and agile production systems means it will continue to be an essential partner for customers worldwide. As geopolitical conditions continue to influence procurement decisions and defence spending patterns, RDM’s integrated capabilities — from high-precision ammunition design to cutting-edge plant engineering — give it a decisive edge.

In an industry where technical proficiency underpins strategic trust, Rheinmetall Denel Munitions stands out as a centre of excellence with deep roots in South Africa and a growing presence on the global stage. Its ability to translate expertise into scalable industrial output will ensure it remains a core player in the ammunition sector for years to come.
