RAND MUTUAL ASSURANCE: Standing Beside South Africa’s Everyday Heroes
For more than 130 years, Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) has been the pioneering social insurer protecting workers and their families at times of life-changing injury, illness or loss. Today, RMA continues to pursue groundbreaking initiatives and partnerships, empowering workers and providing for their medical, emotional and financial wellbeing.
Originally established to care for injured workers in South Africa’s early mining and metals sectors, RMA has evolved into a purpose-driven mutual with an expanding presence across diverse industries. “We exist to care and serve with compassion,” RMA declares, pioneering unique value for money in its continued quest to support life’s journey.
“We believe every worker is the heartbeat of the economy, and their story matters,” the company goes on. “We enable their dreams, empower them, and restore their dignity, as we bid to become a leading diversified and trusted social insurance partner.”
GROUNDBREAKING PARTNERSHIP
More than 130 years into its tenure, RMA’s pioneering spirit has never dulled, and in what it has billed as a “game-changer for the mining sector,” in May last year the company proudly announced a groundbreaking partnership with Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela Investment Holdings (BBKIH) and Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine (SBPM).
Designed to promote commercial growth and facilitate positive social impact, the collaboration looks to improve the overall well-being of mineworkers and mining operations’ surrounding communities, to create a lasting positive influence on local economies and the lives which the mining industry impacts.
The launch of the partnership comprised a visit to the Temo Tlhago Hydroponic Farm at SBPM, a project established in honour of the mineworkers, community members and broader stakeholders of the Bakgatla Community, as those present witnessed a symbol of the parties’ commitment to sustainable development and vocational rehabilitation.
A trend rapidly gaining traction in South Africa in recent months and years, hydroponic farming is emblematic of the collaboration’s commitment to prioritising sustainable practices and community engagement. This innovative method allows plants to grow without soil, using nutrient-rich water solutions, an approach particularly beneficial for sustainable agriculture, improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
“This collaboration represents a shared commitment to creating sustainable initiatives that empower employees, strengthen local economies and elevate health and financial security within mining communities,” commented Freedom Buthelezi, Executive: Partnership Development at RMA.
“I am pleased to note that this partnership is rooted in a shared vision of driving positive change beyond operational success. By integrating financial security, economic empowerment and social well-being into our core approach, we are creating a lasting impact for mineworkers and communities alike.”
RMA Social Insurance Executive, Thulani Sibeko added at the launch: “For us at RMA, this partnership is far more than a formal collaboration. It is a heartfelt commitment to challenging socio-economic exclusion and creating an ecosystem where injured workers and persons with permanent disability are not left behind, but are instead empowered to upskill, retrain, and find new purpose through accessible employment and community engagement opportunities.”
ADVANCING SKILLS
The alliance between RMA, BBKIH and SBPM places a central, unequivocal focus on skills development, and in June last year RMA made great strides in this crucial commitment by establishing a strategic partnership with the Insurance Sector Education and Training Authority (INSETA) and the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA), to enable the parties to collaborate on identified projects.
Enabling RMA to significantly expand its social insurance mandate and programmes, in line with its strategic objectives, the collaboration in turn allows INSETA and MQA to fulfil their statutory mandates and obligations by delivering services to their constituencies.
“At RMA partnerships are a strategic driver that enables us to deliver on our social and commercial aspirations,” assessed RMA’s Group CEO, Mandla Shezi. “This MoU will help open doors for many who are not active participants in our economy and are often marginalised.
“We view this cooperation through the eyes of the worker, the everyday hero. This is about empowering them and their families. This will be achieved by positive interventions such as support for career growth, and the re-skilling and upskilling of current and former workers, including persons with disabilities,” Shezi added, of the partnership succinctly demonstrative of the three entities’ commitment to investing in the future of South Africa and paving the way for sustainable development.
ENHANCED EXPERIENCE
A further watershed deal has already proved to be a significant step in strengthening the delivery of funeral assurance services to South African families, with RMA’s life assurance subsidiary, Rand Mutual Life (RML), concluding a strategic agreement with B3 Insurance Brokers and B3 Soweto to underwrite the funeral assurance and services specialist’s policies to RML.
This arrangement enables B3, which has served South African families through its funeral parlours and related financial services across five provinces with a network of 23 branches since 1991, to offer tailor-made life insurance solutions to its customers, reflecting its commitment to enhancing service quality, transparency, and long-term value for its clients.
“For over three decades, B3 has walked alongside South African families in their most vulnerable moments,” said Elsie Moema, Acting CEO of B3 Insurance Brokers. “Partnering with RML strengthens our promise to deliver transparent, tailor-made life insurance solutions that restore dignity and build lasting trust.” The partnership will, too, harness RML’s strong track record in life assurance and guarantee compassionate and efficient claims handling, bringing to life a shared vision to provide dignified, dependable funeral and life assurance services that honour the lives of policyholders and support their families in times of need.
“This partnership embodies our commitment to ethical governance and compassionate service,” summarised RML CEO Bilal Adam. “By joining forces with B3, we are expanding access to dignified, dependable funeral assurance that honours lives and uplifts families across South Africa.”
