43 AIR SCHOOL: Helping the Next Generation of Airline Pilots Take Flight
Set against the coastal skies of Port Alfred in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, for more than 30 years, 43 Air School has been instrumental in shaping the next generation of professional aviators. “We are committed to developing the most talented airline pilots in the industry,” says CEO, Attie Niemann, who offers insight into huge fleet growth and deployment of the very latest in technology and innovation.
Established as a dedicated pilot training organisation, 43 Air School has grown into one of the largest and most respected aviation training institutions in Africa. “We deliver world-class pilot training by setting the highest standards, unmatched facilities and a serious passion for aviation,” the academy outlines, having produced well in excess of 6,000 graduates who now fly in general, airline and military aviation sectors around the world.
From its purpose-built main campus and headquarters in Port Alfred and satellite branch at Lanseria International Airport, Johannesburg, the school delivers training across the full spectrum of aviation careers from private pilot licences to integrated airline pilot programmes and advanced multi-crew training.
The organisation has built a reputation for combining rigorous professional standards with a global outlook, and today operates a large fleet of training aircraft with dozens of instructors, enabling cadets to train in an environment that mirrors real airline operations. “It is our ability to exceed the expectations of our customers that differentiates us,” CEO Attie Niemann states. “We have trained more pilots than any other private training facility on the continent.”
FIRST-CLASS OFFERING
43 Air School boasts a comprehensive offering for its high-flying students, with residential facilities for hundreds of cadets and a training environment designed specifically for aviation instruction. In an environment that fully replicates real airline operations, the academy’s integrated programmes enable students to progress from their very first flight right through to airline-ready certification, all within a single structured training pathway.
“What really distinguishes from other schools us is the scale and quality of what we do,” Niemann tells Enterprise Africa. “We have online programmes, some of which we are unique in being accredited to deliver them, and we are in the process of bringing our ground school completely online. Our specialism in qualifying pilots for airline training, from the beginning right through, is also a key differentiator – we even help airlines with the selection process at the end.”
“We own the facilities and the airport that we operate on,” Niemann expands. “That in itself is also a little bit different, allowing the students to live on campus, to see, hear, feel the aircraft every day, and it is an essential part of our offering – 85% of our students do not come from South Africa.” Niemann explains that 43 Air School’s renown and allure is far from restricted to its immediate region.
“Some of the premier airlines from the East, and from Asia, train with us – in addition to the African airlines that we serve,” he relays. One recent example of the academy’s increasingly international reach is a training agreement with TAAG Angola Airlines, under which airline cadets complete bespoke training programmes at the school’s facilities.
The spike in demand for flight training since Covid has present 43 Air School with a somewhat enviable issue, Niemann breaks down. “Everything we do is managed digitally, and we have a massive digital media footprint – the largest globally for a flight school, with just shy of 700,000 followers on our social media.
“Our biggest problem is that we are totally at capacity, and physically cannot take more students. We have closed our intake for this year and are fully booked for next year, too. At present our priority is managing the growth back to full capacity, and beyond; we have actually toned down our marketing for the meantime, because we cannot help everybody who approaches us for our services.”
BLAZING A TRAIL
Technological innovation is, and has been for more than a decade, an integral part of the landscape at 43 Air School. “While the technology is lagging somewhat in the realm of aviation training, we have flown the, until now, only electric aircraft in Africa,” Niemann details, of the company’s deployment of the Pipistrel Alpha Electro trainer. “Our work in laying the foundations in electric flight bodes well for the future of aviation training.”
For more than 30 years, 43 Air School has evolved alongside the aviation industry it serves, a commitment which continues with arguably even greater ferocity today. The expansion of its advanced training capabilities through a new ALSIM ALX flight simulator, announced last year, significantly enhanced the academy’s capacity to deliver high-quality pilot training from Private Pilot License (PPL) through to Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC), an addition which, “will improve cost-effectiveness and enhance our Airline Pilot bridging training in addition to our expanding needs,” Niemann remarks.
Already the largest integrated flight training organisation in Southern Africa, Niemann also details forthcoming growth in the academy’s fleet, to a total of 70 aircraft. “This is a substantial number,” he states, with a fourth parallel runway to be added to the Port Alfred facility to further support the increased flight activity generated by the expanded fleet. “We are also busy with bringing VR technology into the initial training phases, in addition to going online with both our school and exams.
“Our continued investment ensures that 43 Air School remains at the forefront of aviation training, not only in Africa but globally,” outlines Niemann. “This expansion allows us to train more airline-ready pilots while maintaining the high standards, safety culture, and personalised instruction that the academy is known for.”
From expanding fleets to integrating sophisticated simulation technology and pioneering electric flight training, this award-winning, industry-leading academy continues to redefine how pilots are trained in a rapidly changing aviation landscape. As the demand for skilled pilots rises worldwide, 43 Air School has positioned itself not simply as a training provider, but as a platform for the future of aviation education.
